I think this is an important problem to fix, but using 2d representation is not the way to go in my opinion for these reasons:
1) This solution will create extra work for artists when creating assets because one will need to generate a 2d representation
2) This is not backwards compatible. One would need to go back and update the existing asset library.
3) In programs like Revit, a 2d representation would still not be enough, one would need to include a masking region underneath, make sure it only shows up in floor plans, ...
4) It would only work for plan views, not for elevations, non-rendered 3d views etc
Instead I would propose to support smooth edges on the Assets. Revit 2022 does not yet support this, but it has been announced that Revit 2023 will support smooth edges on imported meshes. I have made mockups about how assets would look if this was supported, you can find them here: https://twitter.com/pieterschiette/status/1278390583590113281 I hope you will agree they look a lot better and it wouldn't have any of the downsides listed above. I'm also relatively confident that, at least on the CAD implementation side, my approach would be a lot easier to implement.
